One stands alone to carry the weight
in death the soul of a love one's fate.
You ponder the depth of an endless mind,
searching for reasons you'll never find.
The pain that pierced a healthy heart,
that left you with less than you had to start.
On you go a wound in time,
the newest angel spreads his wings.
Tears and joys his memory brings
of things assured and well to know
God has rested his tiny soul.
by Kelly Owens, R.J.'s Uncle

In Remembrance of Richard Joseph Owens

Dear Santa Claus,

My name is Bonnie Owens. All I really want for Christmas is to know that my son Richard Joseph Owens is in Heaven and is having fun being an angel. If you could get him here right now I would be happier, but I know that couldn't really happen. So I just want to know if he's in Heaven resting in peace and I hope he has a very Merry Christmas. And one more thing, tell him I love him very much.

Love,
Bonnie Owens

P.S. I really miss my baby!

Written by Pet LaGod: A 7th Grade student of Bonnie Owen's at the time of R.J.'s death, in response to the assignment: "Pretend you are someone else and write a letter to Santa Claus in their perspective."
